PLM-enabled Continuous Product Development and Delivery for the Automotive & Transportation Industry and Supply Chain

October 2, 2014 | The Inn at St. John's, Plymouth, Michigan

New, just added: Collaboration, Integration, and Sustainability Workshop.
More information HERE

PLM Road Map 2014 is the must-attend event for industry executives and PLM practitioners globally—providing independent education and a collaborative networking environment where ideas, trends, experiences, and relationships critical to the industry germinate and take root. The theme for this year’s conference is “PLM-enabled Continuous Product Development and Delivery for the Automotive & Transportation Industry and Supply Chain.”

Product development today is a set of discrete processes and deliveries around specifications and intellectual property (IP) exchange. Design reviews and delivery schedules drive IP development and exchange. Some industries are driving toward a more continuous model, with more synchronous collaboration and, in the case of software, continuous product delivery. Of course, software is not hardware or electro-mechanical. Continuous product development and delivery requires new technologies and work arrangements.

What we will discuss:

  • The evolution of collaboration to mean co-development across the value chain, from ideation to retirement. To support enhanced collaboration, practitioners are turning to model-based systems engineering.
  • The early use of simulation and analysis in the product definition process.
  • The evolution of PLM strategies and enabling solutions.
  • Many large companies have large, long-lived PLM initiatives; in fact, because of mergers and acquisitions, many large companies have multiple PLM implementations.
  • Reasons why companies are looking to more fluid IT support for product development and delivery, and cloud-based offerings. New licensing models for both cloud and on-premise can help address this need.
  • The role of social tools to support ideation/idea management, application lifecycle management, S&A, and systems engineering.
  • How products themselves are changing. More industries are looking to deliver products as a services, changing the economics, business models and lifecycle planning for new offerings.

Speakers at PLM Road Map 2014 will provide examples from automotive, transportation, and other industries that highlight the people, process, and technology challenges in moving toward a more fluid, integrated continuous product development and delivery model.

Central to the mission and character of PLM Road Map is encouraging the continuous collaboration and synergistic innovation between all members of the PLM ecosystem, including industrial users, subject matter experts, software providers, consulting services firms, industrial and academic institutes, system integrators, and market analysts—all of whom are partners in realizing the vision and value of PLM, especially in the emerging, more sustainable circular economy.

Engineering even at its finest, is an iterative process. Active knowledge and data management is critical to the “first time capable designs”. In today’s global multi-location engineering environment, it is imperative that design and simulation processes are executed in a consistent and error free mode all the time. Automating simulation processes is a way to achieve increased productivity while driving standardization and enabling forward deployment. This presentation will review various approaches, efforts involved, and cost/benefit analysis of automating simulation processes used in designing a complex automotive driveline system. Simulation automation is an essential tool in any modern engineering organization.

Honda R&D Americas has developed and implemented automated CAE tools for design engineers and simulation experts. The tools utilize best in class industry applications in an integrated manner that manages the flow of information and controls the automation from application to application. This presentation will cover the project goals, requirements, struggles, failures and successes. The presentation will include some illustrated examples that show the integration methods and the types of solutions obtained.
  • 1:40 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. | Maturity Assessments Theory & Practice
John MacKrell, Vice President, Systems Engineering Knowledge Council Lead, CIMdata [Bio]
The discussion in this session will center on the use of a maturity model to evaluate an organization’s current state in the use of S&A across three domains of expertise (technology, process, and organization) vs. best practices for S&A. The assessment can also help organizations select a desirable to-be state and the actions required to achieve that state. Such a model will be described and an example shown. Furthermore, the potential of linking the levels of maturity to benefits will be described.
  • 2:20 p.m. – 2:40 p.m. | Networking Break
  • 2:40 p.m. – 4:20 p.m. | Working Session: Managing simulation as a strategic capability for sustained competitive advantage

The CIMdata Simulation & Analysis Knowledge Council focuses on the effective use of simulation for product and manufacturing system development. The research agenda is driven by the members and has recently included Simulation Governance and the Democratization of Simulation. CIMdata is also developing a detailed scorecard and capability assessment for simulation. This tool assesses capability and best practices on a 5-point scale over many aspects of simulation. As such it provides a method for self-assessment and identifies gaps to aid with planning for capability improvements. During this session the scorecard will be reviewed in detail and a copy will be provided to workshop participants. In future work, CIMdata will use the scorecard to evaluate industry and individual company capabilities.
  • 4:20 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. | Closing Comments
