Flexxbotics Expands OPC UA Transformer Capabilities in Open-Source GitHub Project

Flexxbotics, the autonomous manufacturing platform leader, announced new enhancements to the OPC UA transformer within the Flexxbotics Transformers open-source project on GitHub. The expanded OPC UA capabilities further strengthen many-to-many industrial interoperability, high-performance data acquisition, and secure bi-directional control across heterogeneous factory environments.

The updated OPC UA transformer connector driver is available now as part of the Flexxbotics Transformers open-source repository, released under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, at https://github.com/Flexxbotics/transformers

Advancing OPC UA for Software-Defined Automation
OPC UA is a foundational protocol for modern industrial communication, although real-world deployments often struggle with interoperability across diverse vendors implementations and automation architectures. The enhanced OPC UA transformer addresses these challenges by extending OPC UA support within the Flexxbotics software-defined automation (SDA) runtime built for production environments.

The updated transformer delivers:

  • Expanded OPC UA client and server interoperability across a broader range of controllers, machines, and systems
  • Parallelized, multi-threaded data pipelines for high-frequency, low-latency data exchange
  • Secure, bi-directional read/write access for both monitoring and closed-loop control
  • Consistent abstraction of OPC UA interfaces alongside other protocols within a unified automation runtime

“OPC UA is critical infrastructure for modern factories, however, it has often been implemented differently across machine controllers by various vendors which can cause incompatibilities and capability inconsistencies,” said Tyler Modelski, CTO and Co-Founder of Flexxbotics. “By further expanding our OPC UA transformer, we’re giving automation and controls engineers a production-proven way to operationalize OPC UA in a standardized way regardless of the vendor implementation.”

Enabling Many-to-Many OPC UA Interoperability
Within the Flexxbotics runtime, the OPC UA transformer interoperates automatically with all other connector drivers loaded, enabling many-to-many connectivity across OPC UA devices and non-OPC UA endpoints alike. Each new transformer inherits compatibility with all others, eliminating the need for custom point-to-point mappings.

Using asynchronous and parallelized data streams, the OPC UA transformer with Flexxbotics aggregates and contextualizes data across machines, PLCs, robots, inspection systems, and test equipment to support greater manufacturing autonomy and Industrial AI data ingestion.

Expanded Factory Use Cases
The enhanced OPC UA transformer supports a wide range of production automation and orchestration scenarios, including:

  • Closed-loop control across mixed-vendor automation cells
  • Autonomous process control with real-time parameter setting, variable updates, and offset adjustments
  • Digital thread traceability and compliance in regulated industries
  • Automated production lines, tool cells, and advanced robotic machine tending
  • High-frequency data capture for Industrial AI and Physical AI training data sets

As a secure data pipeline, the OPC UA transformer is optimized for ingesting high-volume, multi-modal data streams while maintaining deterministic control behavior.

Open, Permissive, and Commercially Friendly
The OPC UA transformer is released under the Apache 2.0 license as part of the Flexxbotics Transformers open-source project on GitHub. Developers and integrators can freely extend the transformer, adapt information models, create custom automation logic in Python, and deploy commercially with no contribution requirements.

Flexxbotics encourages community feedback and contributions, with real-world manufacturing use cases directly influencing the roadmap for OPC UA and other protocol transformers.

“Open interoperability is essential for the next generation of autonomous manufacturing,” said Tyler Bouchard CEO and Co-Founder of Flexxbotics. “By expanding OPC UA capabilities in our open-source transformer set, we’re enabling companies to scale automation and Industrial AI without artificial constraints.”
