ASME Announces Agreement with Wiley to Strengthen Global Reach and Long-term Sustainability of its Publishing Program

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) announced that it has entered into an agreement with Wiley under which Wiley will operate a significant portion of ASME’s publishing business, including sales and marketing, for ASME journals and conference proceedings, and the digital collection comprising these publications. ASME will continue to manage its book publishing business, a collection of nearly 400 print and more than 200 digital books covering established and emerging areas of interest to mechanical engineers. All ASME publications remain ASME products, with ASME retaining copyright, while its mission, editorial governance, and peer review authority remain unchanged across all publication types.

The Society will continue to work closely with its volunteer leadership, serving as stewards of its corpus of scholarly knowledge. This collaboration ensures that ASME’s publications continue to be guided by the independent technical expertise of its volunteer community, notably the Technical Committee on Publications and Communications (TCPC) and Board of Editors.

ASME journals are widely recognized for their technical excellence and community driven editorial standards. Under the agreement, Wiley assumes ASME’s contractual relationships with libraries, universities, and other customers worldwide to ensure continuity of service.

“This agreement reflects ASME’s responsibility to steward our publishing program for the long term while continuing to serve the evolving needs of the global engineering community,” said ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. “By aligning with Wiley for journals and conference proceedings publishing operations, ASME can remain focused on editorial leadership, volunteer engagement, and advancing engineering knowledge worldwide.”

Wiley brings global publishing, sales, and marketing expertise, along with industry leading technologies, to support the scale, discoverability, and impact of ASME’s publishing portfolio while minimizing disruption to editors, authors, and reviewers.

"ASME has been the connective tissue of the global engineering community for over 140 years. The research in its journals and proceedings doesn't stay on the page, it moves into standards, design decisions, and the physical world,” said Wiley Executive Vice President & General Manager, Research & Learning Jay Flynn. “As the world's largest society publisher, Wiley is built to extend ASME’s reach. Our partnership puts engineering science into the hands of the engineers building what comes next.”

Publishing some of the most prestigious engineering content in the world through its 35+ academic journals, hundreds of books and conference proceedings, ASME content serves the global engineering community by sharing innovative research, inspiring ideas, and encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration. More than 2,000 papers are published in ASME Journals each year, providing essential resources for engineers looking to keep abreast of the latest research, current theory, practice, and application.
