Free Webinar on How Software & Electronics are Transforming Product Engineering

This presentation is part of CIMdata’s educational webinar series.

2024-April-webinarANN ARBOR, Michigan, USA 12 March 2024—CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm, announces an upcoming free educational webinar, “How Software & Electronics are Transforming Product Engineering.” This insightful webinar will take place on Thursday, 11 April 2024, at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) and will last for one hour.

Products of all kinds are becoming much more complex. This is characterized by increasingly intricate autonomous operations and the need to improve environmental impact. The integration of electronic components is driving the rapid advancement of affordable sensing capabilities into products. For this to be achievable, virtual engineering strategies require the support of a digitalized ecosystem that understands a mechanical structure point of view (PDM) and an application management view (ALM). Combining these aspects leads to systems operations with continuous feedback supporting product upgrades after mass production.

This webinar will present the importance of understanding why and how PDM and ALM are becoming systems-focused as products evolve into systems of systems.

Attendees at this webinar will:

  • Understand why the complexities of today’s product systems are forcing changes in strategies for using PDM with ALM.
  • Show how PDM with ALM supports electronics, embedded software, and rapidly growing product complexities.
  • Learn how systems engineering enables companies to address growing complexity without increasing staff levels.

According to Craig Brown, a CIMdata Executive Consultant and the host for this webinar, “Many organizations CIMdata works with today are actively moving their product strategies from a concentration on mechanical aspects to much more complex systems—such as the electrification of all kinds of products. Operational feedback driving product enhancements is happening at a faster and faster pace. Expansive PDM & ALM are advancing virtual engineering strategies and are key to realizing the full potential of multi-domain systems development.”

He continues, “Data from experiences provides insights leading to understanding. The key to managing complexity is learning where to adapt a product based on its actual use. A decade ago, this was done through customer clinics and usage surveys. Today, the data is available in real-time, opening new opportunities for building product safety while adding new features, all without repeating mass production in a brick-and-mortar factory. PDM & ALM must help us manage this opportunity to enable robust, safe operations of complex products.”

Before joining CIMdata, Craig Brown spent 30 years at GM where he was responsible for PLM Portfolio Planning and held assignments in embedded software, systems engineering, CAE Methods, and process improvement. During this time, he led engineering and IT teams in developing tools to improve product and manufacturing engineering. These teams received patents, engineering awards, and records of invention, including using OnStar® to monitor and report vehicle diagnostics. Prior to joining GM, he spent 12 years in the Aerospace/Defense industry focused on control systems and tools to help develop systems for guidance, navigation and control, and signal processing systems. He was a member of the team that invented VHDL and led one of the first commercial tool applications.

This webinar will be pertinent and valuable to people from multiple levels of an organization: senior and middle managers, PDM & ALM team participants, PDM & ALM users (engineers, manufacturing planners, installation and services practitioners, and others), IT, and anyone impacted by how an organization adopts new digital strategies to support product programs.

During the webinar, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about the topics discussed.
