Tecplot, Inc., developer of the leading CFD visualization and analysis software for engineers and scientists, today announced that researchers at the University of Stuttgart’s Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics are using Tecplot 360 EX to help design cleaner gas turbine engines. Working under a grant from the German Research Foundation and the Research Association for Combustion Engines, the researchers specifically are working to improve modern aircraft engines by changing the geometry of turbine blade endwalls, the region between two adjacent turbine blades. The end-users of the research findings -- companies that manufacture gas turbine engines -- hope to incorporate the results into their engine development process. The goal is to make gas turbines more fuel-efficient and help reduce pollutants. If this is achieved, the researchers will aid engine-manufacturers in building cleaner and more efficient gas turbines, which in turn will help the engine-users save money by reducing fuel consumption. Three major Indian IT companies — Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro — have joined President Barack Obama's ambitious Computer Science for All initiative as part of a public-private collaboration, pledging thousands of dollars in grants. Obama announced his “Computer Sciences for All” plan in his weekly address Jan. 30 as he emphasized the need for teaching the subject as a "basic skill" to all children across schools in the country in a changing economy. While Infosys has pledged a $1 million in donation, Tata Consultancy Services is providing support in the form of grants to teachers in 27 U.S. cities, the White House said in a fact sheet, also issued Jan. 30. MathWorks today announced that Kostal Asia R&D Center, a subsidiary of automotive supplier Kostal Group of Germany, adopted Model-Based Design to achieve on-schedule ISO 26262 functional safety-based certification for its new electronic steering column lock module. Extending the use of Simulink for early verification and validation and Embedded Coder for production code generation allowed Kostal to develop a module compliant with Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL D). This certification level requires the highest verification and validation practices throughout the development process and the most rigorous qualification of development tools across all ISO 26262 levels. Kostal is the first company in China to achieve ISO 26262 ASIL D level certification for an automotive product.
