Delcam has released the 2015 R2 version of its PowerMILL programming software for five-axis and high-speed machining.  The new release includes improvements in toolpath simulation and verification, area clearance and drilling, plus more options for customisation by users. For further details on PowerMILL 2015 R2, including video demonstrations of the new functionality, please go to www.delcam.tv/pm2015/lz In the 2015 R2 release, complete verification can be undertaken of a project for machine-tool issues such as collisions, rather than having to undertake verification of each individual toolpath in turn.  Comprehensive verification is performed, including ensuring that the machine tool is capable of running the proposed strategy, as well as checking for both machine-tool collisions and tooling collisions.  A detailed list is generated of any problems found so that these can be fixed on a case-by-case basis. In related improvement, automatic collision checking of area-clearance toolpaths now takes into account any remaining stock on a model, both

TraceParts has announced a sharp increase in the amount of traffic generated in 2014 by its free library TracePartsOnline.net, which boasts over two million registered design professionals. TraceParts launched the TracePartsOnline.net website in 2001, giving millions of designers a gateway to a wealth of technical data on industrial parts and the possibility to freely download CAD models selected for their design projects. With downloads up more than 20% in 2014, TracePartsOnline.net delivered over 50 million CAD models. This increase confirms the growing appetite among engineers and design professionals for downloading parts’ CAD files. TraceParts already highlighted this trend during the second quarter of 2014 (see the TraceParts press release of May 19, 2014), which reflects how the global race for innovation equates to shorter design and development cycles for new products. Numerous part  vendors of electronic, electrical or mechanical components have already implemented online CAD file delivery solutions from their own websites, using TraceParts’ technology and experience. Researchers from academic institutions across Europe will soon be able to perform some of the most sophisticated simulations imaginable thanks to a new partnership between ANSYS and the High Performance Computing Center (HLRS) of the University of Stuttgart/Germany. The partnership offers researchers access to ANSYS' engineering simulation solutions on HLRS' supercomputing assets to perform demanding computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for industrial machinery and internal combustion engine applications. Those applications require all simulation variables to be analyzed over time and space, which puts significant demands on high performance computing (HPC) power and data storage. Both applications involve developing and enhancing sophisticated simulation models that are associated with such complex phenomena as fuel injection, evaporation and fuel-wall interaction, as well as combustion and emission formation. "In the past, academia's adoption of solutions such as those provided by ANSYS on high-end supercomputing platforms was hindered by cost. In some cases, the lack of domain expertise in applying HPC to scientific research
