Cimatron Limited today announced that its next software release planned for mid-2014, CimatronE version 12, will support the Additive Manufacturing File (AMF) format - the new standard for converting 3D models into digital files for 3D printing and additive manufacturing. Explained Mr. Terry Wohlers, principal consultant and president of Wohlers Associates and member of Cimatron's 3D Printing Advisory Board: "Since the late 1980s, the STL file format has been the de facto industry standard for transferring CAD data to additive manufacturing equipment (3D printers). However, the STL format has no provisions for representing color, textures, materials, lattice/mesh structures, units, and other properties of the finished printed part. "The new XML-based AMF standard was developed to bridge the gap between CAD and modern additive manufacturing technology. This file format contains all relevant information required for making a 3D printed part, including the final part's material, color and internal structure.   "The AMF format was jointly adopted as an

Almost three decades before Building Information Modeling (BIM) would go mainstream, the term “Virtual Building” was used in the earliest implementation of BIM through Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD debut in 1987. Since then, the concept hasn’t changed, but visualization technology has advanced to the point where designers, engineers, contractors, and building owners can become so immersed in the virtual building model that they feel as if they’re actually there. Combined with the visualization services offered by Arch Virtual, technologies like the Unity3D game engine and the new $300 Oculus Rift virtual reality headset are making it possible. “The first thing people do when they put on the Rift is to reach out trying to touch the walls or furniture they see in the virtual model, even it doesn’t really exist,” said Jon Brouchoud, owner of Arch Virtual. “It’s an almost involuntary reaction, which I think that says a lot about how immersed they are. Delcam will demonstrate the latest developments in its complete range of CADCAM software on Booth # 3537 at the Pacific Design & Manufacturing show in Anaheim, California, from February 11th to 14th. Highlights will include the new Vortex area clearance strategy in both the PowerMILL and FeatureCAM CAM systems, extra modelling for manufacturing tools in the PowerSHAPE design software and improvements to Delcam for SolidWorks, a completely integrated CAM system for SolidWorks that provides a single-window manufacturing solution that looks and behaves like SolidWorks. The Vortex strategy for high-speed area clearance, for which Delcam has a patent pending, has been developed by the company specifically to gain the maximum productivity from solid carbide tooling, in particular those designs that can give deeper cuts, and therefore higher metal-removal rates, by using the full flute length as the cutting surface.  It can be used for two- and three-axis roughing, for three-plus-two-axis area clearance and

GRAPHISOFT® has announced the launch of EcoDesigner STAR, the first software that places standard-compliant energy analysis in the heart of the architect's familiar BIM work environment. EcoDesigner STAR enables architects to design the most energy-efficient buildings, by themselves or working together with engineers or specialist consultants. Partnering with StruSoft three years ago, the single mission was to revolutionize how sustainable design is carried out in the Building Information Modeling environment. The result of their cooperation was the realization that while "energy" continues to be primarily a concern for engineers, the most important decisions influencing the energy performance of the completed building are made by the architect. "The combination of the BIM model with hourly energy simulation based on weather conditions and operation profiles creates a virtual reality design environment that adds another dimension to the ArchiCAD Building Information Modeling experience," said Miklos Sved, EcoDesigner Product Manager, GRAPHISOFT. EcoDesigner STAR enables architects to use ArchiCAD's building
