Tata Technologies, in partnership with Athletes for Charity and the Detroit Lions, celebrated “Manufacturing Month” at Mark Twain School for Scholars to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Throughout the day, approximately 300 students from kindergarten to eighth grade were introduced to STEM in a “Literacy Zone,” each receiving a book to keep through a book distribution drive.
The event also featured various hands-on science and manufacturing activities in the “STEM Zone,” presented by Tata Technologies, Athletes for Charity, Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, College of Engineering and Chemistry Department. Professionals from Dassault Systèmes, and Ford Motor Company helped motivate the students and promote manufacturing careers. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXCITE’s “Your Product Here” and “Reality Generator” augmented reality apps (available for download) were a huge hit with the kids. Brandon Copeland, defensive end for the Detroit Lions, served as the school’s Principal for the day.
“Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are critical in driving innovation, yet there is a shortage of skilled workers in STEM-related fields because students are not pursuing degrees and careers within the sector,” said Kyle Heythaler, head of Tata Technologies’ North American corporate sustainability program. “At Tata Technologies, we are deeply invested in our community and our youth, and take advantage of opportunities to promote literacy and STEM education in a way that’s fun and engaging for both the kids and volunteers.”
