ANN ARBOR, Michigan, 1 December 2020—CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm, announces the initiation of a multi-sponsor collaborative research program focused on the business benefits and challenges offered by the adoption of a Software as a Service (SaaS) PLM delivery model.
In many leading companies, legacy PLM implementations have often been installed on-site with implementation delays, customizations, and challenges to maintain and adapt to changing business requirements. In smaller companies, PLM is primarily ad-hoc, primarily using Microsoft Excel and shared file services in support of product development. For both, the product development processes are found lacking, unable to support the agility requirements of business today.
This collaborative research program will help answer vital questions about industrial companies’ on-going and planned SaaS-related PLM efforts. It will consider the extent of the business benefits, the challenges overcome, the satisfaction level relative to expectations, and the impact of SaaS on organizational success.
For this research program, CIMdata enlisted several leading PLM solution providers as co-sponsoring collaborative research partners: Aras, Dassault Systèmes, PTC, and Siemens Digital Industries Software.
The research program includes several elements, including an initial webinar to frame the key issues. The webinar will build on research CIMdata conducted in 2017 into the prospects for cloud and SaaS adoption. The webinar will consider the pervasive nature of cloud in our daily lives and will help frame an on-going discussion about the benefits of SaaS PLM. In addition to this webinar, interviews with thought leaders from the Sponsors and their lead customers will be published on the CIMdata.com blog and actively promoted to encourage broader discussion on this topic. CIMdata will publish the survey results for use by members of the PLM Economy.
According to Mr. Stan Przybylinski, CIMdata’s Vice President and leader of CIMdata’s research program, “In our 2017 cloud study, about one-third of the participants believed they would move to the cloud in the next two years. While we may not get the same respondents, CIMdata thought it was time to ‘take the pulse’ of the industry again in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has driven a lot of technology adoption, including cloud-based offerings, and we look forward to getting some insights into these changes.”
