MathWorks today announced that Japan's Kanazawa Institute of Technology is now providing MATLAB and Simulink to students and faculty campus-wide. As a result, the school community has access to the tools on university-managed and student-owned computers for research and classes. Greater access by students and professors to MATLAB and Simulink – as well as 50 additional products from MathWorks – is part of the University’s initiative to create an environment in which active-minded engineering students can focus on solving real-world problems to benefit society. Kanazawa Institute of Technology follows the globally acknowledged approach for engineering education of CDIO – Conceive, Design, Implement, and Operate. The University also encourages “Design Thinking” through its required Project Design class in which students identify specific problems, discover needs and design engineering solutions through a combination of ideas, innovation, knowledge, testing, validation and verification. Prior to the campus-wide access, Kanazawa Institute of Technology had been using MATLAB and Simulink for classes

An organization delivers on its mission through its employees. This fact is often expressed in corporate communication statements such as “Employees are our most valued asset.”  However, despite best intentions, not every organization is able to create an environment in which employees feel valued. This is true even in companies that competitively compensate their employees. To understand this, we, therefore, need to go beyond monetary incentives. Fundamentally humans are motivated by same basic factors Daniel Pink explains in his book “Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us.” The top factors that make knowledge workers more motivated and satisfied are: 1) Belief that their work connects to a bigger purpose; 2) Have the ability to develop mastery, and 3) Have freedom to perform work autonomously.  Daniel Ariely, the behavioral economist and author, also offers evidence that the amount of effort put into the work and appreciation received by others are just as important. So, what

Wind River® is working with MathWorks to integrate Wind River Simics® with Simulink for improved model-based design workflows. This collaboration creates smarter system verification by enabling testing and co-simulation of combined design and platform models, and helps drive better designs while removing risk from future development, test, and integration. By alleviating these risks, this solution can be particularly valuable to engineering teams developing complex and safety-critical products for industries such as aerospace and defense, automotive, and industrial markets. Model-based design is transforming the way engineers and scientists work by moving design tasks from the lab and field to the desktop. In model-based design, a system model is at the center of the development process, from requirements development through design, implementation, and testing. When software and hardware implementation requirements such as fixed-point and timing behavior are included in model-based design, teams can automatically generate code for embedded deployment and create test benches for system verification, saving time and avoiding

AVEVA announced today that Progen Projetos Gerenciamento e Engenharia S.A. (Progen), a Brazilian engineering company, has gained impressive benefits by using AVEVA PDMS™ software on a major greenfield project in Brazil, for multinational EVONIK. ‘We have experienced significant advantages by using AVEVA PDMS on EVONIK’s BOOST project, a new plant that will produce products for the cosmetics industry', explained Renato Marquesano, Engineering Systems, Progen.  ‘Previously we were working with 2D design software and increasingly encountered discrepancies, from inaccurate material lists to high numbers of clashes. This led to significant and costly problems in the construction phase.   ‘On the BOOST project, a large and complex chemical plant with over 1400 piping lines, 1700 manual valves, 300 motors and 1350 field instruments, we have seen dramatic improvements. By using AVEVA PDMS we have been able to create higher quality design deliverables, collaborate more efficiently and greatly reduce rework, all of which have resulted in considerable time and
