Edgecam Joins MTC

Edgecam has become the latest member of the pioneering Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry. Part of Cheltenham-based Vero Software, Edgecam, a provider of CAD/CAM solutions for CNC machining, will work with machine tool and cutting experts at the MTC, developing complete shop floor solutions for manufacturers. As well as its UK bases, Vero has offices all over Europe, North America and the Far East, supplying software products to more than 45 countries. MTC engineers were impressed by Edgecam software’s ease of use and ability to create simple three-axis tool-paths through to complex five-axis milling programs and controlling lathes. Edgecam strategic partnership manager Wesley Tonks said the MTC’s clients represented a diverse range of companies across several sectors including aerospace, automotive, transport, health, ICT, robotics, food production, defence and marine. “The MTC already has 10 examples of Edgecam software to drive its machines, and as they specialise in a range of manufacturing processes that are particularly

Mentor Graphics Corporation today announced its newest offering and key building block in the Xpedition® platform, the Xpedition Systems Designer product for multi-board systems connectivity. The Xpedition Systems Designer product captures the hardware description of multi-board systems, from logical system definition down to the individual PCBs, automating multi-level system design synchronization processes to ensure team collaboration with accuracy and faster design productivity. Current systems design processes for advanced electronics are fraught with multiple, disconnected tools used for system definition, with no standard methodology to synchronize and transfer design data between design disciplines and abstraction levels. This results in incorrect electrical connections, mechanical interference, and the high costs of manual synchronization. The Xpedition Systems Designer product resolves this problem as the industry’s only single, integrated, and automated methodology that captures complete logic system definitions.  The system may consist of multiple boards, cables and other system elements, such as backplane, cable assemblies, sensors

From the 3D Printer into Space

Altair announced today that RUAG Space, with the support of Altair ProductDesign, has built a redesigned, optimized antenna support for an Earth observation satellite, to be produced using industrial additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. The objective was to create an aluminum component that would be significantly stiffer while at the same time lighter, taking full advantage of the design freedom afforded by 3D printing. To redesign and optimize the antenna, engineers used Altair HyperWorks® solver OptiStruct®, guaranteeing a load-sufficient material distribution. For the design, engineers used solidThinking Evolve®. Design freeze was reached after only four weeks. The component was then manufactured with a 3D printer, with no need of further design adjustments. Using topology optimization in conjunction with additive manufacturing, the team achieved elite weight and stiffness performance characteristics not possible using conventional analysis and manufacturing techniques. EOS, the German market leader in the area of industrial 3D printing, contributed its additive

Delcam will demonstrate its full range of CAM software at the Metalex exhibition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 20th to 23rd November.  The latest releases on show will include the 2015 versions of the PowerMILL CAM system for high-speed and five-axis machining, the FeatureCAM feature-based programming software and the PowerMILL Robot software for the programming of machining with robots.  The new release of PowerMILL, Delcam’s programming system for high-speed and five-axis machining, includes improvements to the Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy, expanded collision checking to also cover near misses, and more efficient raster finishing. Vortex produces safe toolpaths with a much deeper cut by using a controlled engagement angle that maintains the optimum cutting conditions for the whole toolpath.  As a result, higher feed rates and material-removal rates are possible, making the cutting time shorter by as much as 70%.  Enhancements in PowerMILL 2015 will give even greater reductions in machining
