NEC Corporation today announced the discovery of a new nano carbon material, the "carbon nanobrush," a fibrous aggregate of single-walled carbon nanohorns. Moreover, NEC has become the first company in the world to manufacture the carbon nanobrush. Carbon nanohorns are horn-shaped nano carbon structures 2-5 nanometers (nm) in diameter and 40-50nm in length, which until now have been produced as radial spherical aggregates. The newly discovered carbon nanobrush is a uniquely shaped material. It is fibrous aggregates composed of radially-assembled graphene-based single-walled nanotubules, named here as fibrous aggregates of single-walled carbon nanohorns, whose structure resembles that of a round brush. "The 'carbon nanobrush' is a new nano carbon material that, like existing carbon nanohorns, has high water and solvent dispersity, and high adsorptivity, including substance adsorption, but has more than 10 times the electrical conductivity than existing carbon nanohorns, an important characteristic for industrial applications," said Dr. Sumio Iijima, Senior Research Fellow, NEC Corporation.

KPMG has announced plans to further increase its cognitive capabilities and apply IBM Watson cognitive computing technology to a range of its professional services offerings in Australia. The ‘Participation Agreement’, signed today between KPMG Australia and IBM Australia, extends on existing agreements in the USA and UK, with other member firms likely to follow. It includes a focus on audit and assurance services. KPMG intends to introduce cognitive technology to these and other offerings, in a move designed to further enhance its focus on quality and insights. Auditing is particularly suited to cognitive technology because of the increasing challenge to tackle immense volumes of structured and unstructured data related to a company’s financial and non-financial information. Cognitive technology’s exponential data analysis capabilities can transform how critical decisions are made and the level of assurance which can be provided. Duncan McLennan, KPMG’s National Managing Partner of Audit in Australia said:

Geometric Limited today announced the availability of a revolutionary new technology that uses SOLIDWORKS 3D DimXpert and Model Based Definition (MBD) 3D dimensions and annotations to automate the programming process for CNC machined components. Aligning with industry initiatives such as Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 for advanced manufacturing, CAMWorks has been uniquely structured to realize the benefits of automated CNC program generation based on tolerance, surface finish, and other annotations in SOLIDWORKS 3D parts. This functionality is possible due to CAMWorks’ ability to extract manufacturing features like pockets, bosses, holes, etc., and automatically create toolpaths based on an internal knowledge base of user definable tools, feeds, speeds, and strategies. Jim Foster (VP channel marketing and sales) says, “The opportunity to reduce the need for 2D drawings while helping to automate CNC machining to this level is truly exciting. Toolpath programming processes that typically take hours can now be
