Students at the University of Connecticut will be better prepared to develop new cutting-edge products by using the same engineering simulation technology leveraged by thousands of professional engineers around the world, thanks to an agreement with ANSYS. The ANSYS® suite of multiphysics software will also be used extensively to support research activities across UConn. ANSYS recently donated a campus-wide license to UConn, giving students and researchers access to leading structures, fluids, electronics and systems simulation solutions used by tens of thousands of organizations in virtually every industry. The ANSYS campus-wide solutions program helps to consolidate curriculum tools, reduce software procurement and IT costs, expand simulation scope and increase research innovation. "This is a win-win arrangement between UConn engineering and ANSYS," said Baki Cetegen, head of UConn's mechanical engineering department. "This allows our students to learn to use the state-of-the-art computational software for fluid dynamics, structural and thermal analyses to analyze complex engineering problems. Their experience in learning the engineering

A recipe for Collaborative Innovation and Product Development?   I have been following Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir journey since 2009. Whitacre is one of the most popular choral conductor-composers working today. He says that the idea of a virtual choir came to him when a 17-year-old recorded a video of herself singing Whitacre’s Sleep and posted it on YouTube. Whitacre wondered if he could get a group of people to sing one of his pieces and blend it into a single online choral performance. So, he recorded a video of himself conducting and supplied the sheet music on-line. The first virtual choir production, Lux Aurumque, was posted five years ago on YouTube. It featured 185 singers from 12 countries. The video has received more than 3 million views. The second virtual choir project, Sleep, was released in 2011, featuring more than 2,000 voices from 58 countries. The third virtual choir production, Water Night,

OPEN MIND Technologies AG has released version 2014.1 of the hyperMILL® CAM solution. More powerful basic features, improved automation options and new tools underscore the leading technological position of the CAM suite. Reamers, barrel cutters in different designs and lens cutters can be fully exploited with the new version of hyperMILL®. The new 3D point measuring cycle helps to accelerate quality assurance processes. Automatic rework machining Improved 3D rest machining allows for the automatic detection of rest material areas where additional roughing is necessary. Additional roughing passes are calculated for these areas. 5axis rework machining has also been improved. When converting from 3axis toolpaths to 5axis toolpaths, different tool types, such as barrel and woodruff cutters, can be used. There are also new strategies for adjusting the tool to the machining model. The new function can also be used for the hyperMAXX® high-performance cutting module and inherit variable technology values. CAD deformations hyperCAD®-S, the CAD

Delcam will demonstrate the 2015 version of its Delcam for SolidWorks integrated CAM system at IMTS 2014 in Chicago from 8th to 13th September on booth E3222, the largest CAM software booth at the show.  The new release will include a range of enhancements in three-axis milling, drilling, turning and wire EDM to make the software even more valuable to SolidWorks users that need to manufacture their designs.  Programming of three-axis toolpaths for complex parts will be easier and more reliable in Delcam for SolidWorks 2015 with the addition of automatic collision checking of the tool shank and holder, as well as the cutter, for both roughing and finishing operations.  If a gouge is detected the toolpath will be able to be recalculated with any segments that will cause a gouge clipped away. Removing these segments of the toolpath will leave an area of unmachined stock that will need to be removed
