Altair Partners with the University of the Philippines to Nurture Next Generation of City Builders

Altair and The University of the Philippines have teamed to promote the development of next generation architects through the use of cutting edge simulation technologies in teaching, training and design projects.

As part of this collaboration, Altair is providing free licences for its computer-aided engineering and design solutions software HyperWorks® and solidThinking®, to the Architecture Faculty of the University of the Philippines to be used in the University's first-of-its-kind Design Lab. The Altair design and simulation software and applications will serve as the backbone of the faculty's new Design Labwhich will serve as a platform for undergraduate and postgraduate students to leverage on technologies to study new ideas that will improve the quality of lives in a highly urbanised environment especially in the design of disaster-resilient structures (houses, schools and evacuation centers, a common problem facing developing Asian cities, including The Philippines.

Altair Managing Director for ASEAN, Srirangam Srirangarajan, explained, "Today's architects play a key role in designing sustainable living solutions to address 21st century issues such as climate change and clean energy requirements.  Emerging technologies such as simulation software and optimisation techniques help architects solve complex designs and infrastructural problems, allowing them to develop impactful buildings and city designs, push new design frontiers and provide them with the right tools to create optimized and sustainable design solutions  that will ultimately improve the lives of the people of The Philippines."

"Given Altair's pioneering expertise and knowledge in simulation technologies, we look forward to sharing our industry know-how with the University of the Philippines and helping them set new benchmarks in architectural education, in support of the University's goals to nurture more 'industry-ready' young architects," Srirangam added.

Commenting on the partnership with Altair, the Dean of the UP College of Architecture – Professor Mary Ann A. Espina said, "In support of the nation's vision to build more sustainable and liveable homes, we are delighted to partner with Altair in the Design Lab project. The University of the Philippines is one of the early adopters of the technology innovation in the academia space, I am confident that with this partnership we will be able to nurture more future architects who will continue to push boundaries to develop quality and sustainable cities that meet future urbanization, energy and mobility needs."

At the moment, the University will be exploring the possibilities of using the HyperWorks® and solidThinking products in its science research project – the Build Back Better Program. The project's scope covers designing disaster-resilient houses, schools and evacuation centers, and the software by Altair is believed to contribute significantly in developing creative and high-quality designs for the said projects.

The collaboration with the University of Philippines is one of several initiatives carried out by Altair to promote design and product innovation amongst businesses and education institutions in the region. Other areas of focus include joint research programs and training platforms to support design innovation.
