Bilello

The “platformization” of PLM Peter Bilello, President, CIMdata The "platformization" of PLM is underway. It is the culmination of three irresistible trends: the evolution of personal productivity tools, the migration of discrete end-to-end lifecycle-management capabilities to the extended enterprise level, and greater cross-functional and extended enterprise collaboration. PLM platforms of the future will be the foundation upon which functional capabilities, data, and processes are enabled and executed—everything users need, when they need it, all in one place. The near-term goal is to enable the innovation essential to the creation of physical and digital products, systems (a combination of the physical and the digital), and services. This presentation will discuss this rapidly evolving trend and provide a look into the future of PLM enablement.

Young

Additive Manufacturing & Conformal Cooling Lou Young, Jr., Director of New Business Development,Tooling & Manufacturing, Linear Mold & Engineering This presentation addresses the capabilities of 3D metal printing and conformal cooling that previously were not possible through conventional machining. By using additive manufacturing, design capabilities are endless. Linear has developed an expertise in the design and build of tooling inserts with conformal cooling channels that help reduce cycle times and drastically improve part quality. 3D metal printing technology excels in cases in which part designs have varying wall thicknesses, tight dimensional tolerances, and challenging mold geometry. This permits even cooling and prevents warp, sinks, and other quality problems. Straight water lines are required when using conventional methods; consequently, the intersection of two straight-drilled water lines creates a low-turbulence area where sediment may build up. This technology enables the design of complex water lines that eliminate these areas. “It’s a cool change.”

Bell

Model-Based Systems Engineering and PLM Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Bell, CIO, Global Product Development, Information Technology, General Motors The challenges in the automobile business are ever increasing with more stringent emissions and fuel economy targets combined with more and more conveniences for our customers. Accelerated development of these complex systems requires improved PLM and its virtual capabilities. PLM will accelerate product development when it enables well managed model-based systems engineering. GM needs our key suppliers in PLM, virtual engineering, and embedded systems development to integrate their solutions well. The systems engineers of the future need realistic, virtual models which can evolve as knowledge is acquired, thus providing the best decision making environment for robust products.

Delcam will demonstrate the huge time savings that can be made with its Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy at Seco’s ‘Inspiration through Innovation’ manufacturing best-practice event to be held at the company’s premises in Alcester, Warwickshire, on 24th and 25th September. For full details on the event, please go to www.secotools.com/en-GB/GB-United-Kingdom/Events/Inspiration-through-Innovation/. The Vortex strategy offers substantial time savings by allowing users to make deeper cuts using the full flute length as the cutting surface.  A series of trials run by Delcam, on different machine tools within its Advanced Manufacturing Facility, has shown that time savings of up to 70% are possible with the new strategy. Unlike other high-speed roughing techniques that aim to maintain a constant theoretical metal-removal rate, the Vortex strategy produces toolpaths with a controlled engagement angle for the complete operation.  This maintains the optimum cutting conditions for the entire toolpath that would normally be possible only for the straight-line moves.  As a
