MSC Software Corporation today announced the release of Adams 2014. Efficiently designing and testing mechanical systems is a challenge for some engineers due to lack of smooth integration between system dynamics and finite element analysis (FEA) software domains. The Adams 2014 release addresses this issue by introducing new native nonlinear part modeling and analysis, and co-simulation between Adams and Marc nonlinear finite element analysis. Adams 2014 also extends popular machinery and automotive industry solutions with the new Cam module in Adams/Machinery and extended vehicle modeling and rollover events in Adams/Car. Highlights of this release include: New Adams Native Nonlinear Part Modeling and Analysis The FE Part is a new Adams-native modeling object for very large deformation use cases, and specifically considers geometric nonlinearity. The formulation options are based on MSC adaptations of the Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation (ANCF) and Geometrically Exact Beam Formulation (GEBF). Engineers can more accurately calculate dynamic loads for geometrically nonlinear parts within a multibody dynamic

Equations are the life blood of engineers, but research shows growing dissatisfaction with the choices for finding the equations needed to solve the problems engineers face. Recognizing this gap, Knovel introduced a better option for engineers. Knovel Interactive Equations, now available via Knovel's cloud-based platform, launches with hundreds of validated engineering equations that engineers can search through, solve and share in a variety of formats. A 2013 Knovel Engineering Survey found that roughly one-third of engineers rely on equations multiple times per day. Knovel Interactive Equations applies Knovel's years of expertise in engineering research and development to help engineers solve many of the common and uncommon challenges they face. Highlights of the offering include: Hundreds of equations with detailed descriptions of variables and their units, formulas, the original sources with links to references and citations, along with worked calculation examples, all in one place Web-based Equation Solver software that can be used without local installation or IT support Responsive design

The BlueCielo solution will streamline document management and control processes; enhance Management of Change (MoC) and support global collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. Star Cruises, the leading cruise line in Asia-Pacific, has selected BlueCielo Project Portal for all its new building projects. The BlueCielo cloud solution was chosen due to its powerful document control, change management and collaboration functionalities. Star Cruises has placed a contract with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft for a new cruise ship. The 150,000-GT new building will have 1,680 cabins and is scheduled for delivery in fall 2016. This order will increase the shipyard's order book from six to seven large cruise ships up to the year 2017. About 3,100 direct employees of MEYER WERFT as well as about 20,000 employees of supplier companies and partners in Europe will participate in this project. This extremely large project will be the first to be managed using BlueCielo Project Portal. Why Choose BlueCielo Project

Imagine a future in which wireless electricity makes everyday products more convenient, reliable, and environmentally friendly. WiTricity Corp. is working to make this a reality, developing wireless electricity technology that will operate safely and efficiently over distances.  The company was founded in 2007 to commercialize an exciting new technology for wireless electricity invented by world renowned physicists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). With a growing list of global clients in industries including consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices and defense, WiTricity has emerged as the leader for IP and expertise in highly resonant wireless power transfer.  WiTricity was a typical start-up company with a small team managing design information in Excel spreadsheets. Even with the minimal amount of data they were managing, they were experiencing the chaos of manual processes.  Spreadsheet revisions were constantly changing with no formal change control process or centralized repository location.  They needed to replace their

US Preview of VISI 21 at IMTS

Major enhancements in the forthcoming new release of VISI, from Vero Software, will be on display for the first time in the US, at North America’s largest manufacturing technology exhibition – IMTS, from September 8 to 13. To be fully released at the end of October, VISI 21 includes completely new machining strategies for 2, 2.5 and 3-axis environments. In addition, a new toolpath simulation manages the ISO output, providing users with an enhanced and accurate virtual representation of the part, before committing it to the machine. The new release also introduces new “hybrid” milling strategies which will adapt different types of finishing toolpaths to match the component geometric form. Updated CAD developments include new technology for managing multiple instances of the same geometry. For example, multi insert molds and dies can now be managed simply with a single reference part which will update all subsequent updates of the same geometry if

ESI Group announces the second worldwide conference for users of OpenFOAM; free, open source CFD software developed by ESI-OpenCFD, licensed and distributed by the OpenFOAM Foundation. OpenFOAM is the most popular open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, widely used in the academic world and in industry. OpenFOAM owes its success to its extensive range of features that enable users to address anything from complex fluid flows involving chemical reactions with turbulence and heat transfer, to solid dynamics and electromagnetics. OpenFOAM addresses a very diverse community, ranging from academic institutions, where it is used in teaching a research, to commercial organizations. Today, large companies are implementing the code on an industrial scale for applications in automotive, chemical, marine, energy and heavy industry sectors. Given such a large and growing community, it’s no surprise the first OpenFOAM conference, held last year in Frankfurt, gathered over 250 participants coming from all around the world. The 2014 OpenFOAM conference will once again provide the perfect

3D seems to be the tech topic of the year in Canada's western provinces and the nation's own Javelin Technologies is leading the charge, partnering with creative engineers in sectors such as agriculture, oil and gas, water purification, manufacturing, health care, and education. Known across Canada for working alongside designers to help turn their concepts into reality, Javelin has gathered its nationwide team this week to learn, network, strategize, and socialize, and to celebrate all it has achieved since the purchase of Automated Design Systems (ADS). That move, in April 2013, gave Javelin four new locations and an established team in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. Javelin's head office is just west of Toronto in Oakville, Ontario and it has an eastern Canada hub in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Intensely focused on training and ongoing support, Javelin is a Certified Reseller for SolidWorks® computer-aided design (CAD) software and a full range of Stratasys 3D printers that can produce finely detailed, true-to-life

Pukala

Using Social Engagement to Drive Innovation Megan Pukala, Assistant Brand Manager, Fortune 500 company Innovation drives competitive advantage for today’s leading companies by seeding both the products and services that accelerate top-line growth as well as the cost and organizational efficiencies that deliver the bottom line. However, the large scale of these leading companies often includes processes and checkpoints that can slow the pace of innovation. One way big organizations have used “small” thinking to seed more disruptive and more frequent innovation is by encouraging and better-enabling employees to explore their own business-driving ideas outside of standard leadership-driven channels. In her talk, Megan Pukala will share her experience engaging employee minds across all levels to create ideas for a major category and brand. Megan will also discuss the collaborative backbone and the social platform used to facilitate ideation.
