IBM announced that businesses of all sizes – from start-ups to large enterprises – are rapidly adopting IBM Bluemix to develop software in the cloud with greater speed, security and quality. IBM also announced additional services on Bluemix, which will move from beta testing and into production later this month. Bluemix, IBM’s open cloud platform, is based on an open standards foundation, Cloud Foundry, and provides developers access to IBM’s software for integration, security, transactions and other key functions, as well as software from business partners. As a result, it can help developers connect two broad categories of systems in a cloud environment: systems of record, such as core banking and accounting systems, and systems of engagement, such as mobile, situational and social apps. Bluemix, IBM’s Platform-as-a-Service, offers cloud-based “DevOps” services which enable developers to rapidly develop and deliver projects faster and more efficiently. Using Bluemix services: Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) dramatically reduced

Granta Design has announced the latest updates to their environmental data for materials. This release addresses two major challenges for providers of eco data: confidence and coverage. New ‘traceability’ features help users to build trust in the data, which is drawn from a range of respected sources. Access to data from the ecoinvent database extends a data library that is already unique, covering the complete range of engineering materials, integrating eco properties with the engineering, cost, regulatory, and other data needed to make effective materials-related decisions. The data is applied to understand the environmental and regulatory risks associated with materials, processes, and products. It enables practical eco design, supporting ‘streamlined LCA’ (Life Cycle Analysis) integrated into early-phase product development. Engineers save development time, avoid compliance problems, and improve product performance, while reducing environmental impact. Granta’s MaterialUniverse data module provides property data on thousands of engineering materials—complete and normalized, enabling meaningful comparison and

In late April, the 15th annual Congress on the Future of Engineering Software (COFES) was held in Scottsdale, Arizona USA. COFES is one of the most important events for the CAD industry, and each year is organized by research agency Cyon Research. Two years ago, ASCON Group used the event to announce its new CAD component, the C3D geometric kernel. ASCON subsequently formed C3D Labs to take charge of developing and marketing the kernel. This year, C3D Labs took part in COFES as an independent company with its own customers and its own vision for the future of geometric kernels. The business agenda of the congress included two technical briefings organized by C3D Labs and moderated by long-time CAD expert Ralph Grabowski, editor of the WorldCAD Access blog and publisher of the upFront.eZine newsletter. “I was impressed by the level of engagement by participants, as they took on the challenge of thinking
