LEDAS Ltd., today announced new capabilities in its LEDAS Geometry Comparison (LGC) component. LGC now supports most formats from today’s MCAD systems, including all flagship and mid-range products of the top four CAD vendors. Because LGC makes it possible to compare models from any source, the new release allows users to work with CAD models without worrying about native formats. And so LGC allows users to open and then compare native parts and assemblies from CATIA, NX, Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor, and Solid Edge. As well, it fills out its coverage of 3D interoperability formats by adding JT and ACIS to those already supported, STEP, IGES, and Parasolid. To handle the new formats, LEDAS decided on licensing the translation component from Datakit, software that has a proven track record. “Expanding the list of supported CAD formats was the most requested feature that we received from users, following the first release of LGC,” said Alexey

Simpleware has joined 3T RPD Ltd in the GOSSAM (Generation of Optimal Support Structure in Additive Manufacturing) project. Funded by Innovate UK, the project aims to develop innovative and advanced intelligent metal additive manufacturing (AM) support structures. Launched in October 2013 and running to December 2015, GOSSAM targets breakthroughs in the often-overlooked area of support structures used in the manufacturing of components. Support structures are typically required to build unsupported geometric features on metal DMLS parts. The use of supports however removes the complete design freedom offered by additive manufacturing; additionally supports may need to be created which cannot be removed post production. Supports may comprise up to 50% of the build mass, and can considerably increase the set-up, build and post-processing times. New software solutions are being developed through GOSSAM to automatically orientate parts and then generate intelligent scaffolds for them. The long-term goal of the software developed for GOSSAM is

Pointwise announces the latest release of its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) meshing software featuring direct integration with overset grid assembly (OGA) software. “The integration of grid generation and overset grid assembly represents a vast improvement over the hodge-podge of disparate tools typically employed by practitioners of overset CFD,” said Nick Wyman, Pointwise director of applied research. “What we are releasing today for production use is the result of a multi-year research effort Pointwise conducted with funding from the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Complex, Air Force Materiel Command. That research was followed by a full year of fine-tuning in preparation for release to all our customers.” Overset gridding is a technique that avoids the topological complexity of generating abutting, point-to-point connected, multi-block grids by allowing the component grid blocks to overlap. The price paid for that flexibility is the need to ensure a sufficient degree of overlap so the CFD solver

Delcam has released the 2015 version of its PowerINSPECT inspection system.  The new version includes automatic collision avoidance, faster import of large CAD files, quicker preparation of longer inspection reports, and improved display of results from point-cloud data, plus many other customer-requested enhancements. PowerINSPECT has included collision detection for many years to warn the user when there was a possibility of any collision between the probe and the item being inspected.  Until now, the user then had to make the required changes to the probe path to avoid the collision. With PowerINSPECT 2015, the software adjusts the probe path automatically if a direct move between inspection features could produce a collision.  The software will calculate a new motion path that avoids the obstacle, typically by moving up and over the obstruction or around it.  Collision avoidance is carried out when the initial probe path is generated, when the sequence of measurements is re-ordered, and
