New Age Collaboration and Design John Mannisto, Director of Engineering, Simulation-Based Design, Whirlpool Corporation Global companies need to use their size to their advantage. Drawing on the best of our global teams and their collective knowledge is essential, and we need to provide the tools and promote the behaviors that can make this happen. Social media is outpacing corporate collaboration, and we need to pay attention. Facebook and Twitter have taught us that if you provide fun, intuitive tools, people like to socialize. If we can leverage this behavior in the work place, collaboration will thrive. Our internal experiment, Whirlpool Commons, is discussed, including some of the more interesting sources of inspiration (hint: they grew up with cell phones in their pockets).

Mike Perez, Strategic Projects and Services Manager, Technical Information Solutions, Caterpillar Inc. Mike Perez is the Strategic Projects and Services Manager for Technical Information Solutions at Caterpillar. Mike and his team are responsible for the management of Caterpillar’s Technical Information Transformation which is a joint development project with PTC to migrate, develop, and implement an integrated off-the shelf solution for technical information authoring, management, delivery, and access, replacing Caterpillar’s legacy solution. Mike is also responsible for operational support of the current technical information delivery system, media delivery, and Caterpillar’s Translation Services. Over his 28 year career at Caterpillar Mike has worked globally in the areas of Product Support and New Product Development supporting Caterpillar’s Dealer Network and customers. Mike holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois.

UK Preview of VISI 21 at Interplas

Major enhancements in the forthcoming new release of VISI, from Vero Software, will be on display in the UK for the first time at the Interplas Exhibition. To be fully released at the end of October, VISI 21 includes completely new machining strategies for 2, 2.5 and 3-axis environments. In addition, a new toolpath simulation manages the ISO output, providing users with an enhanced and accurate virtual representation of the part, before committing it to the machine. On show at stand A6 in Hall 4 at the NEC in Birmingham, from September 30 to October 2, VISI 21 also introduces new “hybrid” milling strategies which will adapt different types of finishing toolpaths to match the component geometric form. At the SAE 2014 Aerospace Manufacturing and Automated Fastening (AMAF) Conference & Exhibition, September 23-25, 2014 in Salt Lake City, CGTech will be demonstrating the process of programming and simulating automated drilling and fastening machinery. Visitors to CGTech’s booth, #204, will have the opportunity to receive an overview of the steps needed to drive an automated drilling and/or fastening machine. There will be information on projects that highlight the implementation and use of machine independent off-line NC programming and simulation software for these machines. A new partnership to provide education in 3D printing technology and additive manufacturing has recently launched in Austin to position the State of Texas as a global leader in the 3D printing and additive manufacturing industry.
