PTC announced it has launched the PTC IoT Academic Program  to address the growing concern of an IOT talent shortage by providing students with an investigative learning experience and hands on exposure to the ThingWorx® IoT application development platform. A recent study published by the World Bank estimates that over the next 10 years there will be two million unfilled Information and Communication Technology-related jobs globally. In addition, over 95% of companies say they will be using the IoT in some form within the next three years. This requires educational institutions to better prepare students for employment by these companies. The PTC IoT Academic Program consists of the ThingWorx application development platform in a PTC-hosted environment where students and educators can build their own IoT apps. Users gain access to step-by-step educational content and ThingWorx training from PTC University with curricular that will help them quickly learn the platform as well as a community web presence to

EEMBC®, the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium setting the industry standard for valuable application-specific benchmarks, today announced its focus on a benchmark to ensure optimum efficiency of edge nodes (end points) on the Internet of Things (IoT). This new benchmark, currently in development within EEMBC’s IoT working group, aims to provide a standardized, industry-created and -endorsed method to provide application developers with accurate, reliable information that allows them to quickly and equitably compare the efficiency of system solutions targeted at IoT end-point applications. An edge node, referred to as the 'thing' of the IoT, has four primary parts: 1) the sensors or transducers; 2) the processing (e.g. security, compression, protocol stack, data analysis); 3) the interfaces connecting the transducers and microcontroller; and 4) a communication mechanism used to send/receive information between the edge node and the network. When designing an edge node device, battery-life is often one of the most important factors

Fujitsu and Intel announced that they have reached an agreement to combine Fujitsu Laboratories's distributed service platform technology with the Intel IoT Gateway to build IoT systems. The two companies initially seek to focus on development in the areas of manufacturing, retailing, and the public sector. They have commenced a Proof of Business at Shimane Fujitsu, designed to enable greater visualization of the manufacturing facility's operations.  Fujitsu's distributed service platform technology allocates service functions across an entire network, including both the network centre and remote sites, enabling unified management. A cloud-based centralized-management mechanism is set up at the centre, and this optimally distributes data processing in response to monitored information received from each gateway. This optimized processing, distributed through gateways, happens automatically and without human intervention, in response to service requirements. To make the most of the distributed service platform using this technology, some processing needs to be handled at the

CD-adapco announced today a new standard in performance and scalability for industrial CFD software. Working in partnership with High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and SICOS BW, STAR-CCM+® was run on the entirety of the 1.045 PetaFlop Hermit cluster, managing to maintain perfect scalability beyond 55,000 cores. The work was completed as part of the ongoing multi-year project to benchmark, profile and ensure optimal STAR-CCM+ performance and scalability on petascale computing systems. A number of different benchmark cases were run, ranging in size from 500 million to 2 billion cells, all generated automatically using parallel meshing technology and without the need to split the geometry into multiple blocks. “The ability to perform simulations with such massive core counts is a real breakthrough for the CAE industry, and a direct result of our close collaboration with HLRS,” said CD-adapco Senior VP of Product Management, Jean-Claude Ercolanelli. “In under a year, this project has

Robotmaster (Jabez Technologies) today announced the launch of the latest version of its leading robotic programming software, offering enhanced design and usability along with several new feature sets. By considering the various ways in which one would want to program an industrial robot, the workflow has been redesigned and will be at a minimum three times and up to ten times faster than previous versions. Expanding on previous optimization tools, Robotmaster V6.2 sets a new standard for robotic programming. In addition to core technology enhancement, V6.2 has been designed to further elevate programming productivity, adding a synchronization feature which will allow simulations to synchronize any CAD/CAM path modifications. What’s unique about this enhancement is the integration of optimization and simulation allowing users to rapidly check for collisions and errors visually prior to running a full simulation. Together, these capabilities result in solutions that help make various industrial manufacturing applications more intuitive

Fujitsu announced that it has developed FUJITSU IoT Solution UBIQUITOUSWARE, an Internet-of-Things package that senses the status of people and things and their surrounding environments and analyzes the data to quickly provide valuable, actionable data tailored to a customer's business. The package consists of UBIQUITOUSWARE core modules that, in combination with sensors, microcontrollers and wireless communication function to analyze sensing data. These core modules work in tandem with middleware that uses sensors to learn and analyze data in the cloud. Sensing data is analyzed using the Human-Centric Engine, Fujitsu's proprietary algorithms, which convert data into information that customers can put to use quickly, such as fall-detection or body-posture detection. UBIQUITOUSWARE is available as a package of modules and middleware that is easily installed in existing devices and systems. The first example of a device embedded with UBIQUITOUSWARE is the UBIQUITOUSWARE Head Mounted Display, announced today. Location badges, vital-sign sensing bands, and other
