ModuleWorks’ development team has been working hard to add support for barrel mill cutters to their 5-Axis machining strategies. Recent testing has shown the benefits of this as part of the main 5-Axis component and also in the MultiBlade application. Barrel mill cutters are not new but they have not been commonly used in 5-Axis applications until recently. Their unique geometry form has a number of benefits in the machining process. The effective radius of engagement is larger than a standard cutter form and this will result in smaller cusps between passes leading to better surface finish. Larger step over values can be used and this results in shorter machining times. The ModuleWorks 5-Axis component allows barrel mill tools to be used with all of the existing machining strategies. Delcam’s Korean joint venture, Hankook Delcam will again have the largest stand of any CADCAM company at this year’s SIMTOS exhibition (Seoul International Machine Tool Show) to be held from 9th to 13th April at the Kintex International Convention Center in Koyang City.  Hankook Delcam will demonstrate the full range of Delcam’s CADCAM software at the exhibition, including the company’s complete design to manufacturing suite and its specialist products for the footwear and healthcare industries. Stratasys Ltd. has selected finalists for the 10th annual Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge. A finalist in the college engineering category, Straggling Laces was submitted by Carrie Groskopf and Eric Reid from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. The global contest offers students in middle school, high school and college the opportunity to redesign an existing product or to create a new product that improves how a task is accomplished. Entries are evaluated based on creativity, being mechanically sound and being realistically achievable. The top-10 finalists in each category (middle school/high school engineering, college engineering and art/architecture) will receive a 3D printed model of their design and a $50 gift card. During the final round of judging, industry experts will select winners in each category. The judges this year are: Todd Grimm (President, T.A. SPRING Technologies exhibited in booth 868 at the MMTS (Montreal Manufacturing Technology Show), from May 12 to 14.
