Do any of the following statements sound a little too familiar?
  • Failure modes observed in the past are missed when a new FMEA is generated
  • FTA is unreliable due to mistakes made by product engineers in developing the fault tree
  • Mistakes are made in upfront robust design due to improper understanding of system architecture
  • Customer confidence in products is eroding due to repeat issues in derivative products

Semantic web technology based ontology is generally associated with its potential to help convert implicit subject matter knowledge in any domain to explicit machine-readable and -searchable knowledge. The availability of explicit machine-readable domain knowledge is expected to help avoid repeat mistakes, as well as foster better innovative solutions compared to previous ones.

In the area of robust design, the reuse of knowledge about previous product failure modes and previously adopted design choices to overcome those failure modes is crucial domain knowledge. Due to the growing complexity of the products stemming from the increasing use of sensors, actuators, intricate algorithms, and software, the reliance on knowledge reuse from previous designs and design iterations is imperative to mitigate warranty issues, recalls, and product launch delays.

CIMdata believes that semantic web technology applied to knowledge capture and reuse related to product failure modes and robust design solutions could help mitigate the reliability risks of complex products with sensors, actuators, control algorithms, and software. CIMdata believes that this would be relevant for today’s products, as well as for those of the future that are likely to be much more complex due to increasing application of connectivity and artificial intelligence.

This webinar is a sequel to the one presented on August 24th, 2017 entitled “Semantic Web Technology helps Design-for-Reliability.” The webinar will demonstrate CIMdata’s experience in applying semantic technology based ontology for knowledge capture and reuse related to Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The demonstration will highlight what can be realistically expected from applying semantic technology to the two areas of reliability engineering which are commonly used in several industry verticals such as automotive, aerospace, heavy machinery, medical devices, etc.
