Tackling Shipbuilding’s Unique Challenges by Integrating Multi-PDMs Within a PLM Landscape
Shipbuilding faces unique challenges. The industry is defined by complexity, arising from concurrent engineering and production processes, the structural differences between “as-designed” and “as-built” states, the tendency to be one-offs, the size and complexity of the projects, and fragmented supply chains. Conventional monolithic product lifecycle management (PLM) implementations frequently prove insufficient, as they impose lifecycle governance at the expense of engineering agility. The introduction of a specialized product data management (PDM) layer to coexist within a PLM landscape addresses this conflict. The integrated CAD-PDM supports the agility of discipline-specific workflows to create a high-quality "as-designed" model, while the PLM consolidates the "as-built" models as digital twins for lifecycle support through ISS, MRO, and end-of-life. The coexistence of PDM and PLM should, therefore, be interpreted not as redundancy but as a necessity, enabling shipyards to reconcile engineering and production efficiency with long-term lifecycle value realization.
