  4. 09:25 – 10:00 | An Alternate View of the Systems Engineering "V" in a Model-Based Engineering Environment
Don Farr, Senior Technical Fellow, Boeing Research & Technology  [Bio]
The iconic Systems Engineering “V” has served government, industry, and academia well for over 25 years as a model of the product development process for complex engineered systems. This familiar V portrays the decomposition of requirements and design definition from system down to components (down the left side of the V) and the resulting system integration and validation from components up to the end-user system (up the right side of the V). Today, exponential improvements in computing speed and power have allowed aerospace engineers to dramatically increase the use of analytical models and simulations leading to the creation of digital twins. Corresponding advances in software and data standards enable the use of single-source of authoritative data and streamline the analytical interfaces and functional handoffs via the digital thread. Furthermore, as new capabilities are introduced into the model-based engineering (MBE) process, the digital thread can extend across customers, OEMs, and suppliers, providing an unprecedented level of concurrency, collaboration, and feedback throughout the ecosystem. An alternative approach, the “MBE Diamond” will be presented that captures these advances and bring the digital thread to life by enumerating the physical and virtual paths into a model for concurrent collaboration in the product lifecycle that will span the product, production system, and support system. Further, an approach for establishing a true cyber-physical system where the digital twin is embedded with the physical platform will be shared.

  8. 11:30 – 12:05 | PLM - CLM Axis vital for Digitalization of Product Process
Mikko Jokela, Head of Engineering Applications CoE, ABB [Bio]
To enable digitalization opportunities and benefits requires fully-fledged end-to-end information management processes. Breaking the organization silos and enabling right information in the right place at the right time, requires a new thinking about engineering and PLM. MBx, CLM, PLM, and SCO interfaces with the integration of physical and digital model and modelling processes will open up a new world for more efficient, predictable, and faster customer-oriented business. But how do we move from the old to the new? What are the challenges and differentiations of different business types? What is PLM’s role in this revolution?

  9. 12:05  – 13:15 | Networking Lunch & PLM Collaboration Café
  10. 13:15  – 14:00 | KEYNOTE: Digital Revolution in Automotive - A System of Systems Approach to Product Design
Professor Dr.-Ing. Martin Eigner, Chair of Virtual Product Engineering, The Technical University of Kaiserslautern  [Bio]
  11. In a mid-range vehicle we have more than 100 vertical mechatronic and cybertronic systems. Each of these consists of up to 30 subsystems. Today, these vertical systems are each assigned to a specific system supplier who has the mechatronic development competence. It is evident that with a horizontal networking of the systems, a much higher customer benefit would arise, e.g. if the Adaptive Cruise Control were networked with the Navigation and Steering System. To implement this interconnectivity, OEMs need to take on the Mechatronic Architecture competency and design and network horizontal systems at an upper level of the system architecture.
  12. 14:00 – 14:35 | Additive Manufacturing at Moog
Peter Kerl, Engineering Systems Manager, Moog Inc. [Bio]
  13. As Industries begin to mature their strategies toward achieving value through the use of Additive Manufacturing they are finding many successes and challenges. This session will cover strategic decisions around metal AM in an Aerospace Company and explore how people, process and tool paradigms are being affected.
  14. 14:35  – 15:10 | Additive Manufacturing Enabled Supply Chain
James van Oss, PLM Architect & Strategist, Moog Inc. [Bio]
  15. Blockchain technology has been used in crypto-currency transactions most notably Bitcoin. Blockchain has several key attributes that lend it to provenance in the supply chain, product lifecycle management, and digital thread definition. This presentation will cover some key problems, benefits, and solutions in these areas using Blockchain technology.

  16. 15:10  – 15:40 | Networking Break & PLM Collaboration Café
  17. 15:40  – 16:15 | What is Needed to Achieve Value from PLM? Value Creation through Synergies between PLM and Digital Transformation
Daniel Dubreuil, CDO for Products and Service, Safran [Bio]
Digital Transformation, like any “next big thing”, carries with it a heavy load of hype and confusion. It may be asserted correctly that Digital Transformation is the next step in the evolution of PLM. However, Digital Transformation goes beyond PLM, exploiting the company’s PLM resources in a broader business context. In this new context, PLM is central, but to achieve these new possibilities the PLM resources must evolve to be more accessible, understandable, and flexible to serve a broader range of business uses. At a time when many still wonder whether Digital Transformation is real or just the latest buzzword, CIMdata research provides a strong indication that industry is taking the promise of Digital Transformation very seriously. For the PLM community, a logical question (i.e., concern) is how PLM and Digital Transformation coexist within a company? In this session, a former CIO, now CDO (Corporate Digital Officer) for Products and Services within a major A&D corporation presents key issues and strategies for successful integration of PLM and Digital Transformation.
  18. 16:15  – 16:55 | KEYNOTE: Bringing all the Digitalization Trends Together, what's next?
    Peter Bilello, President, CIMdata [Bio]
Professor Dr.-Ing. Martin Eigner, Chair of Virtual Product Engineering, The Technical University of Kaiserslautern  [Bio]
With Digital Transformation being enabled through a host of business initiatives, like PLM, IoT, Industry 4.0, Big Data, Additive Manufacturing, and many more, it can be quite confusing to figure out where to start, how these initiatives relate to each other, and most of all, how to apply them to the benefit of your company. In this presentation, Dr. Martin Eigner and CIMdata’s President, Peter Bilello, will participate in a fireplace conversation to discuss these questions. First, Peter Bilello will briefly summarize the PLM Road Map event. Dr. Eigner and Mr. Bilello will then discuss how to best bring together these initiatives for the betterment of your company. They will also take a look ahead and brainstorm on what trends are on the horizon. The conversation will be facilitated by your host of the day, Mr. Gerard Litjens.
