The Aerospace & Defense PLM Action Group (AD PAG) collectively sponsored a team of domain experts from AD PAG member companies to define objectives, requirements, and roadmaps for digital twin/thread solutions. In Phase 1 the team conducted research that identified a plethora of digital twin/thread concepts and definitions. A method of describing this phenomenon was prepared to organize and understand the definitions. In support of preparing the A&D industry’s digital twin/thread definitions, the team prepared constructs to describe the intended functionality and utility of the digital twin/thread. The resulting A&D industry definitions are the collaborative work of representatives from several leading A&D companies. The Phase 2 project deliverable consisted of a digital twin/thread position paper for the A&D industry. The purpose was to facilitate an industry baseline definition and understanding of the current capabilities of the digital twin/thread in the A&D industry. Phase 3 is in the process of evaluating the effectivity of current Business Architecture Frameworks and Methodologies in support of the architectural definition of digital twins and digital threads. This presentation will provide an overview of this project’s findings to date and implications to the current concepts of digital twins and digital threads.

This executive spotlight will provide an insightful discussion between those in the know and in control of where digital enablement is. As PLM professionals, we are uniquely aware of the nature and impact of rapid change in the digital landscape. We know that PLM can drive Digital Transformation to a greater extent than most other digitalization initiatives when appropriately applied. We also know that PLM can address sustainability at a product or system level, contributing in a major way to a sustainable future. But what is the future of PLM in the age of digitalization and what are the key elements of a successful transformation? Many in the PLM industry believe that the purchase and enablement of a major PLM platform will solve all of its needs, but this is almost never the case. The digital thread and other major digital initiatives typically require multiple solutions. Those solutions need to be integrated to permit the management and access to product definition information throughout the lifecycle, from concept through life. This gathering of key executives from several focused PLM solution providers will shed light on how their organizations envision the future and plan to be key enablers of their clients’ future digital success. Discussion topics include PLM’s place within enterprise architecture, integration and interoperability strategies, process enablement and adoption acceleration, and the digital enablement and PLM landscape in 5 to 10 years.

Bernd Feldvoss, Value Stream Leader PLM Interoperabilty Standards, Airbus [Bio]
Collaboration among Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and their product design and manufacturing engineering partners and suppliers is key to any major aerospace and defense (A&D) program. Process analysis by an A&D PLM Action Group (AD PAG) project team has shown that the exchange of product data, such as 3D-MBD, Bill of Materials (BOM), and Model-Based Engineering (MBE), between multiple OEMs and suppliers presents a challenge within the industry. Currently, the exchange methods for long-term collaboration between OEMs and suppliers are independent and exclusive environments and protocols, each unique and complex. Improving the consistency and efficiency of establishing and managing OEM-supplier collaboration can significantly improve cost, schedule, and quality across all phases of the product lifecycle. This presentation offers a new “Desired State” for OEM-supplier collaboration through the application of and adherence to a set of guidelines defined by the project team.
