PTC announced the Onshape Labs™ initiative, a new early-access program within its Onshape® cloud-native CAD and PDM platform that gives participating customers a first look at emerging functionalities, including new uses of AI, delivered directly inside the product development workflow. Broader availability is expected later this summer, when users will be able to opt in through the Onshape “Preferences” settings under “Onshape Labs.” Product development is entering a new phase, one where AI moves from disconnected tools into the core systems where products are designed and defined. But most CAD systems were not built to support that shift. Onshape’s cloud-native architecture changes that by capturing every design decision in real time and creating the structured data and context that enables AI to understand design intent, learn from past work, and take action. Onshape Labs is how PTC intends to bring these capabilities to customers quickly, embedding AI into everyday engineering work rather than layering it

Oracle announced a new AI-native builder experience for Oracle AI Agent Studio for Fusion Applications that enables customers and partners to create and run Fusion Agentic Applications natively within Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications. Fusion Agentic Applications represent a new class of enterprise application: outcome-driven systems backed by teams of specialized AI agents that reason, coordinate, and decide, then execute work through Fusion business objects, workflows, tools, policies, approvals, and logged actions. Unlike standalone agents, copilots, or disconnected AI automation tools, Fusion Agentic Applications are designed to operate inside the enterprise system where the work already happens. They run natively in Oracle Fusion Applications, inherit Fusion security and governance controls, act against Fusion business objects and workflows, and provide the auditability required for enterprise execution. The new builder experience brings no-code, low-code, and pro-code development into one Fusion-native framework. Business users can start with natural language using the Agentic Applications Builder, while developers and partners can

Global sales of total semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are forecast to reach a record high of $165.9 billion in 2026, increasing 23.2% year-on-year, SEMI announced today in its Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEM Perspective. Growth momentum is expected to continue through 2028, with total equipment sales forecast to reach a record $229.5 billion, marking five consecutive years of growth as AI-driven demand reshapes semiconductor manufacturing investment.  The stronger outlook reflects accelerating investment in AI infrastructure, leading-edge logic, advanced memory, and back-end technologies needed to support higher compute density, high bandwidth memory (HBM)-related investment, and increasingly complex device architectures. “AI is accelerating demand for more powerful and efficient chips, driving increased investment across the semiconductor capital equipment market,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. “The mid-year forecast points to a higher equipment spending trajectory as chipmakers invest in the leading-edge logic, advanced memory, test and packaging capabilities required

Last week, the global PLM community gathered in Lecce, Italy, for the IFIP 23rd International Conference on Product Lifecycle Management (IFIP PLM 2026), hosted by the University of Salento on July 6–8. OpenBOM was proud to be among the sponsors of the event, and I had the honor of delivering one of the keynotes and presenting OpenBOM during the industry sessions. If you have never been to an IFIP PLM conference, here is the short version: it is the place where PLM research and PLM practice actually talk to each other. Professors, PhD students, industrial practitioners, and vendors spend three days in the same rooms, asking each other hard questions.  This year’s theme — “Frontiers in Product Lifecycle Management: Managing the Complexity of Industry through Intelligent, Resilient and Sustainable Technologies and Methods” — set the tone for a program heavy on AI, digital thread, digital twins, and sustainability.
