ITI Partners with Purdue Polytechnic Institute on CAD Modeling using CADIQ Validation

Leading global interoperability solution provider, International Technegroup Incorporated (ITI), is pleased to announce a partnership with Purdue University’s technology college, the Polytechnic Institute, to support enhanced CAD Modeling courses by utilizing CADIQ, ITI's CAD validation software.

CADIQ is a CAD vendor-neutral model verification and validation application for identifying model-based design (MBD) data quality issues, impacting downstream re-use for manufacturing, simulation, data exchange, and collaboration. CADIQ enables you to validate critical engineering processes, including engineering change, revision control, collaboration, and manufacturability.

CADIQ's key capabilities include:

  • Derivative Validation - Identifies unacceptable differences between native and derivative models
  • Revision Comparison - Identifies unintentional or undocumented changes between revisions of a model
  • Quality Checking - Identifying significant defects in a native model that impact downstream re-use

CADIQ compares geometry, design features, and product manufacturing information (PMI) between related models to identify significant differences. CADIQ also performs CAD assembly analysis, comparing CAD assembly structure. Results can be reviewed in the standalone CADIQ Viewer as well as summary text and statistical reports.

This solution has user-friendly 3D PDF reports which are generated for distribution across an enterprise. When design problems are diagnosed on the manufacturing floor, CADIQ can effectively communicate them back to engineering using 3D PDFs.

CAD Validation is an integral part of any Product Lifecycle and Model-Based Enterprise. However, engineering design students might not be familiar with CAD validation practices directly out of school. Through ITI's partnership with Purdue Polytechnic, students will gain exposure to the industry-leading CAD Validation software, CADIQ, and the critical role that validation plays in CAD model design MBE processes.

In her Model-Based Definition course, Rosemary Astheimer, Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology, uses CADIQ and plans to use it in her Geometric Modeling Applications course next fall, getting reports from the software in front of hundreds of students.

Using CADIQ, Astheimer can identify design differences and deviations from modeling best practices in the students’ models compared against a target model. Feedback is provided to students in the form of CADIQ's 3D PDF reports, allowing students to interact with the results and review the differences in the models.

“I found that the 3D PDF report generated by CADIQ made it much easier for me to understand the assignment requirements that were not met and what I needed to do to fix it. The report also helped me better understand the results and my grade for the lab,” said Jake Donovan, a senior at Purdue University.

“Having access to industry documentation helps students become familiar with the various ways companies use data visualization in industry. Seeing this type of variability not only helps to better prepare students to transition into the workforce but also improves our ability to succeed as a student,” said Samantha Kovats, a student at Purdue.

“The 3D PDF generated by CADIQ, in particular, gave me a much better understanding of my part and its specific features that needed improvement, something that was a lot more difficult to do in previous labs without this information,” said Kovats.

Tyler Corkran, ITI's CADIQ Product Manager, has enjoyed the partnership with Purdue Polytechnic Institute, stating, “We are very pleased to have been able to work with Purdue Polytechnic for several years and our partnership has led to expanded functionality with CADIQ. Ultimately, the use of CADIQ will benefit students by providing meaningful feedback on modeling practices while also benefitting the industry in the future as new engineers are better prepared for the rapidly evolving MBE environment.”
