Coreform wins DOE Phase II SBIR to enable improved modeling for nuclear energy simulation

Coreform LLC, a leading developer of commercial isogeometric analysis software, announces its award of a Department of Energy Phase II SBIR to enable broader use of MOOSE for nuclear energy simulation.

Nuclear energy codes developed by the Department of Energy are increasing in importance, as a growing number of private nuclear companies rely on them to develop non-lightwater reactors and government agencies continue to push the frontier in nuclear science. However, these codes are currently underutilized because of onerous workflows to prepare and review designs for simulation.

Coreform completed a proof-of-concept integration between the MOOSE nuclear simulation code and Coreform Cubit during Phase I of this SBIR, along with enhancements to allow for cutting-edge, highly accurate Coreform isogeometric analysis (IGA) spline meshing representations to be fully leveraged in the MOOSE simulation code. Additionally, Coreform released Coreform Cubit Learn, a free non-commercial-use license of Coreform Cubit. This free license allows for academic researchers to use the same toolset as the commercial nuclear energy industry when leveraging the open-source MOOSE framework.

In this Phase II SBIR, Coreform will further develop the connection between Coreform Cubit and MOOSE. This work will enable nuclear companies to accelerate their time to market for safe nuclear reactors, improving their ability to simulate detailed, fully 3D models with more reliable quality assurance. Similar benefits will be seen in other industries, including automotive, defense, and aerospace.

“We are excited about working with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the MOOSE team to enable significantly improved simulation workflows for the nuclear energy industry,” says Coreform CEO Matt Sederberg.
