Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced that Wihuri Group, one of Finland’s biggest privately-owned companies, has selected the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform to create a scalable, sustainable technology environment for its broad portfolio of businesses. The new architecture delivers improved transparency of costs and expenditures by business area, ensures data sovereignty and increases automation, performance and efficiency. Moreover, Wihuri is making significant strides towards their sustainability goals through HPE Asset Upcycling services to return old equipment to the HPE Technology Renewal Center and is reducing energy consumption via HPE GreenLake by minimizing overprovisioning.
Wihuri Group is a diversified, global enterprise, split across four business units: aviation, packaging, grocery wholesale and technical trade. The organization had initially planned to spend three years overhauling its IT environment and wanted to accelerate modernization and selected HPE GreenLake to reduce this timeframe to one year, establishing for the first time a single, state-of-the-art IT infrastructure.
The cost-effective solution creates a single, powerful, updated approach to data. It offers new functionality, and scalable storage, while allowing access to information previously held on legacy systems. By choosing HPE GreenLake, Wihuri retains ownership of the locally held data at its existing data centers, but with increased functionality and features.
“We’re delighted to be working with HPE to bring together the Wihuri family under a single banner, with a modern platform such as HPE GreenLake delivering new functionality and instantly scalable storage,” said Juha-Matti Heino, CIO at Wihuri Group. “Our companies continue to thrive in their separate trading environments, but by adding HPE GreenLake at the heart of our business we are able to bring together and leverage data from across the group, giving us scope to serve our customers across the sectors.”
The solution creates ability to internally allocate billing based on each business unit usage, along with better visibility of usage across the conglomerate, separated by cost center. In addition, HPE GreenLake provides flexible compute and storage resources, allowing Wihuri to grow and shrink capacity as business needs evolve.
HPE GreenLake enables Wihuri to access information that had previously been siloed in IT systems designed for the sector-specific business units, including SaaS and SAP-based solutions. Some areas require systems specific to the sector, and need guaranteed security. HPE’s experts successfully advised on integrating these specialist systems without opening confidential information to the wider group.
The result is a hybrid cloud solution with a single management interface, delivered through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform. All data will be retained on in Wihuri’s own data centers and can be scaled, enhanced and refurbished through the HPE Asset Upcycling scheme. The old IT infrastructure will be decommissioned and sent to HPE’s Technology Renewal center, where it will be safely and sustainably recycled. Additionally, Wihuri can benefit from lower power consumption and improved utilization, which will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by a significant margin which aligns with Wipak’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2025.

“We are thrilled to see the HPE GreenLake platform meet Wihuri’s needs for a modern scalable, secure hybrid-cloud platform,” said Mikko Eerola, Managing Director, HPE Finland. “We look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship with Wihuri as it continues to expand together with our partner, Atea Finland, who has been instrumental in delivering this solution.”
Atea Finland, a long-time partner of HPE, applied its expertise and experience to help develop a seamless infrastructure deployment. Atea Finland has since played an integral role throughout the sale and facilitated the deployment phase of the HPE GreenLake solution.
“We are delighted to collaborate with HPE and Wihuri on this cutting-edge cloud project,” said Juha Sihvonen, Managing Director at Atea Finland. “We leveraged our expertise to deploy a customized HPE GreenLake solution that allows Wihuri to cut their IT modernization process by two years and focus on increasing business needs.”
