CIMdata Publishes PLM Trends Market Report

Second Module of the 2020 PLM MAR Report Series

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, USA, 16 June 2019—CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm announces the release of the CIMdata PLM Industry Review and Trends Report, the second of five modules of the CIMdata 2019 Market Analysis Report Series. The MAR Series provides detailed information and in-depth analysis on the worldwide PLM market during 2019. It contains analyses of major trends and issues, revenues of leading PLM providers, and revenue analyses for geographical regions, industry sectors, and historical and projected data on market growth.

The 2020 PLM Industry Review and Trends Report focuses on “Products, Smartly Connected.” The last thirty years have seen significant advances in computing, with ever-increasing power and memory available for decreasing cost. Early products with embedded software were developed for aerospace and defense applications—usually delivered as specialized applications on specialized hardware. The advent of cheap computing, sensors, and ubiquitous networking make smart, connected products economically viable for many more applications. Today, for many products, most of the customer value is delivered via software. Recent CIMdata research suggests that smart, connected products are increasingly important to the success of industrial companies in a range of industries. Ninety-six percent say smart, connected products will be important or very important to their market success.

Making these products smart and connected requires industrial companies to expand their product lifecycle management strategies and implementations to include electrical and electronic design (sometimes down to the chip level) and software development. Each of these disciplines has different tools, development and management processes, and timescales. Based on our research and industrial consulting experience, most industrial companies are, at best, finely orchestrating their siloed development threads to yield the needed work products at pre-defined milestones in product development. The “single source of truth” is at best logically single, with each discipline retreating to their own data and process management solutions.

The bill of material (BOM) has been core to product data management since the beginning. The engineering BOM must be transformed to create the manufacturing BOM, and then you get into the “as-” BOMs, i.e., the as-manufactured BOM, the as-installed BOM, and the as-maintained BOM. As more companies look to pursue product-as-a-service strategies, starting with a known as-built BOM and managing the as-maintained BOM will be essential to delivering on their service level agreements (SLAs). Some are looking to evolve their digital twins with the evolving product, keeping them in synch to use simulation to assess faults and possible maintenance and/or improvement actions.

In this report, CIMdata explores the issues in developing, manufacturing, deploying, and maintaining products from idea through life, starting with the early phases of product development, and offers examples and guidance to help the PLM Economy more successfully move into our smart, connected future.
