The second installment in a three-part series that explores the platformization of PLM
ANN ARBOR, Michigan, 15 January 2015—CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm announces the publication of a new position paper, the second in a series of three that explore PLM Platformization.
“Platformization: Dealing with a Matrix of Headaches” considers platform support for “ideation,” or idea generation, which is at the heart of innovation. Platformization is driven by the complexity of allocating investment capital, overcoming a scarcity of human talent, complying with increasing regulation, satisfying consumers, and guarding against the risk of litigation. Handling these compound issues is best achieved by a matrix approach where ideation is a key requirement.
In this paper CIMdata suggests that platformization will give users unprecedented power to subdue competitive threats, cope successfully with disruption, and keep up with leaps in technological advancement. According to Peter Bilello, CIMdata’s president, “The concept of platformization as a living, self-organizing entity will inevitably bring us to end-to-end lifecycle governance—from idea to obsolescence. In our business we are constantly reminded by the user community that governance in innovation and end-to-end lifecycle management is crucial. A far-reaching shift is underway that no enterprise, small or large, can afford to miss.”
The third and final paper in this series will look at how platformization impacts the PLM marketplace as end-to-end lifecycle management becomes increasingly about sustaining the extended enterprise, and not just about enabling better, faster, and cheaper products.
