IoT: Expanding the PLM Opportunity

With the talk of IoT booming across almost every industry and the number of connected products exploding towards mindboggling numbers, IoT has become a major economic force. A force that is predicted to grow at an increasing rate during the next decade. While IoT mainly provides the possibility to connect products, by collecting and exchanging data, it is the use and application of that data and the new business opportunities that come with it that make IoT so important for companies and consumers alike. There is a wealth of insightful information that can be generated from the right data, and that is where the challenge lies. This topic will be covered in more detail at CIMdata’s PLM Market & Industry Forum which will take place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA on March 30; Stuttgart, Germany on April 6, Bangalore, India on April 10; Beijing, China on April 14; and Tokyo,

Electronic security and trust are key concerns in the digital era, which are magnified as everything becomes connected in the Internet of Things (IoT). NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NXPI) today disclosed details of a secure platform for building trusted connected products. The QorIQ Layerscape Secure Platform, built on the NXP trust architecture technology, enables developers of IoT equipment to easily build secure and trusted systems. The platform provides a complete set of hardware, software and process capabilities to embed security and trust into every aspect of a product's life cycle. Recent security breaches show that even mundane devices like web-cameras or set-top boxes can be used to both attack the Internet infrastructure and/or spy on their owners. IoT solutions cannot be secured against such misuse unless they are built on technology that addresses all aspects of a secure and trusted product lifecycle. In offering the Layerscape Secure Platform, NXP leverages decades of

For almost three years, Siemens’ product lifecycle management (PLM) software business has been helping Land Rover BAR to design, evaluate, verify and produce Britain’s America’s Cup Class (ACC) catamaran – on-time and on-budget. Over 85,000 hours of design and build have resulted in a 15 meter boat that includes 1200 meters of electronic and electrical cabling connecting 190 sensors and four video cameras. Working with Siemens, the team successfully managed the ambitious schedule using an integrated software environment for product lifecycle development that enabled multiple disciplines to work together seamlessly. The result is a vessel – christened “Rita” today in a ceremony on the island of Bermuda – designed to bring the America's Cup back home to where it all began in 1851. “Siemens’ software technology has enabled us to simulate, analyze and test design solutions throughout the design and build process,” said Andy Claughton, Chief Technology Officer of Land

In a scenario where business is more and more impacted by the Internet and end customers are increasingly able to tell manufacturers exactly what they want and when: Manufacturers must respond quickly With improved flexibility to enable individualized mass production With efficiency to reduce energy and resource consumption. Merely focusing on the automation of manufacturing processes or on the cost and efficiency of individual production operations is no longer enough to compete in the global marketplace. A holistic approach, spanning the entire value chain and including suppliers, is necessary.  The growing complexity and variation of markets is forcing manufacturers to rethink their source-make-deliver processes, depending on target market locations, requirements and conditions. This requires a closer integration of manufacturing operations in the company’s overall value chain – which will in turn call for harmonization of technologies, the capability to handle massive data flows, the use of appropriate metrics and last but not least, the correct interpretation of
