At the Ann Arbor session of CIMdata’s global PLM Market & Industry Forum series on April 4 we delivered a presentation on Digitalization & MBSE: Market Trends, Challenges & Opportunities. During the presentation, we polled the audience which consisted of a collection of senior leaders of PLM solution and service providers.
We asked: In which domains of MBSE is your company currently applying emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Deep Learning?
The results of the poll are shown below:
While the poll results were not too surprising, based on CIMdata’s current assessment of the maturity of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) implementation in industry, they are nonetheless quite interesting. Traditional systems engineering activities have historically been very focused on requirements and so applying new digital technologies such as Artifical Intelligence and machine learning to this relatively mature domain is a logical next step for the software solutions community. Similarly, performing trade studies in the early stages of conceptual systems design is a fairly widespread best practice in industry, albeit the digital tools and models to do such trade studies vary widely with Excel spreadsheets and custom codes still quite prevalent.
Of more significance in the poll results is the total absence of any positive responses in the area of applying these new technologies in the "systems architecture definition and design domain." While the sample size and background of the attendees does not likely provide for a definitive conclusion in this regard, CIMdata believes that the 0% poll response is indeed indicative of the relative lack of maturity in the use of MBSE digital technologies in industry today. This points to both a major challenge and a significant opportunity for enabling more widespread use of MBSE technologies and “augmented intelligence” to democratize the application of MBSE best practices.
Let us know what you think about the poll results!
