Delcam’s stand (C05 in Hall 4) at the Milan EMO exhibition in October will feature a demonstration system for the polishing of turbine blades by robot.  The system, which has been developed by Delcam Professional Services in association with Finland-based JOT Automation, uses an ABB robot driven by a combination of Delcam software including PowerMILL Robot and PowerINSPECT. During the development of the process, simulations were undertaken in PowerMILL Robot to ensure that the robot could complete the progress of the blades around the cell without any collisions or any singularities resulting in erratic movements. As well as showing how the use of a robot could replace manual operations, the cell provides an example of Delcam’s adaptive machining technology.  As with other adaptive processes, the polishing operation is altered for each blade individually on the basis of inspection data collected at various stages in the process. Each blade is transferred into the cell

EMA Design Automation Inc., a full-service provider of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) solutions, and Arena Solutions, a pioneer of cloud-based Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) applications, announced that Cadence OrCAD PCB (printed circuit board) design tools and the Arena cloud-based PLM system are now more comprehensively integrated. “This new software integration is a result of the strategic alliance we announced at the beginning of this year,” says Manny Marcano, president and CEO of EMA. “Engineering teams will now have a direct link between their PCB design tools and their corporate PLM system, maintaining data integrity between the engineering work-in-process data and corporate product lifecycle data.” This new integration enables two-way communication between the two databases to ensure data integrity by eliminating manual processes. As a result, end-users can upload a BOM (bill of materials) directly into the Arena PLM system. An automatic upload directly from the OrCAD environment ensures that the BOM is correctly formatted

Researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and a Bay Area company are joining forces to explore how design software can accelerate innovation for three-dimensional printing of advanced materials. Under an 18-month Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), LLNL will use state-of-the-art software for generative design from San Rafael-based Autodesk Inc. as it studies how new material microstructures, arranged in complex configurations and printed with additive manufacturing techniques, will produce objects with physical properties that were never before possible. In the project, LLNL researchers will bring to bear several key technologies, such as additive manufacturing, material modeling and architected design (arranging materials at the micro and nanoscale through computational design). LLNL and Autodesk have selected next-generation protective helmets as a test case for their technology collaboration, studying how to improve design performance. “As an organization that is pushing the limits on generative design and high-performance computing, Autodesk is an ideal collaborator as we investigate

The On-Machine Verification version of Delcam’s PowerINSPECT inspection software provides “an invaluable tool” according to Process Application Engineer, Stewart Seedhouse, from the Makino-NCMT Grinding Division.  The technology saves both Makino-NCMT and its customers considerable amounts of time and money. PowerINSPECT OMV uses probing equipment on the machine tool to allow initial checking of parts to be carried out in situ on the machine rather than having to transfer them to coordinate-measuring machines for inspection.  NCMT has represented the complete Makino range of machining centres in the UK for many years.  In 2006, in recognition of the company’s leadership in the application of VIPER grinding, the Makino-NCMT Grinding Division was set up in Coventry to market the technology throughout Europe.  VIPER grinding employs small, vitrified aluminium oxide wheels in creep-feed grinding mode on Makino machining centres, in place of conventional, plated cubic boron nitride wheels.  It is mainly used in the production of components

Vero Software (“Vero”) has licensed D-Cubed software, developed by Siemens’ product lifecycle management (PLM) software business, to help improve motion simulation studies. Vero selected D-Cubed AEM (Assembly Engineering Manager) and CDM (Collision Detection Manager) to help users perform motion studies directly within VISI 21, Vero’s fully integrated design and manufacturing solution for the Mold & Die industry. "VISI customers need to model the complex motion of parts in mold and die assemblies accurately and rapidly,” said Marco Cafasso, Product Development Manager, Vero Software. “Using our graphic timeline, operators can control the start and end movement cycles for various groups of components. The D-Cubed team worked extensively with our development team to optimize the performance of AEM and CDM in this demanding use-case. The quality and responsiveness of technical support enabled us to deliver a superior solution to our customers.” Vero’s VISI portfolio offers a unique combination of applications including fully integrated wireframe, surface and

During the last weeks of October 2015, CADD Edge, Inc. is hosting two Concept2Design (C2D) annual SOLIDWORKS training and user events — the 2-day Foxwoods conference followed by the 1-day New Jersey event. With its wide array of offerings, industry professionals who use SOLIDWORKS technology eagerly attend CADD Edge’s annual events year after year, each time discovering new ways to optimally use their programs and learn about new tools that can aid in their efficiency. Stephen Bodwell, design engineering manager for CPS Technologies Corp., Massachusetts, has participated in C2D events five times. He describes his experience attending the 2014 "Dueling Design" session, wherein two of CADD Edge’s application engineers demonstrated their design expertise: "They were given the model to create, but they created it in different ways. Each person presented a different version of it, and it was a practical lesson in versatility and creativity.” Frank Biolsi, marketing director of Sonnex Industries, expresses

CRL-U.S. Aluminum is making it easier for the A & D community to incorporate its glazing systems into their Autodesk Revit® or AutoCAD® building models. Using the Autodesk Seek platform, they can now download CRL-U.S. Aluminum Building Information Modeling (BIM) files, giving them the ability to work faster and with more confidence. Because BIM files give detailed digital representations of the company's glazing systems, CRL aims to create a reliable resource for making key product decisions. Autodesk Seek allows design professionals to easily locate, preview, and download branded materials from manufacturers in order to increase efficiencies when designing structures. BIM files take it a step further by providing detailed three-dimensional building product models that can be integrated into architectural drawings throughout all phases of the design process. BIM content also provides greater flexibility and accuracy when it comes to specifying. "Our goal with offering BIM content on Autodesk Seek is to minimize
